2 critically injured after rocks thrown at vehicles on Hwy. 48 in Markham, OPP investigating

Two people were critically injured in a crash following a rock-throwing incident on Highway 48 in Markham, Ontario. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and York Regional Police are actively searching for a suspect who allegedly threw rocks at several moving vehicles, causing a serious collision.

• The incident occurred on the night of September 20, at approximately 11:40 p.m.
• Police responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision near Highway 48 and Major Mackenzie Drive.
• Investigators believe the crash was caused by a rock deliberately thrown at one vehicle’s windshield by someone driving by.
• The driver and passenger in one of the vehicles sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Earlier incidents reported

Just over an hour before this crash, two other vehicles were struck by rocks in separate incidents on Highway 48, just north of Elgin Mills. The drivers in these incidents sustained minor injuries and were treated at the hospital.

Investigation updates

Police have released images and video footage of the damaged vehicles in hopes of gathering more information from the public. Aurora OPP is urging anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have witnessed suspicious activity to come forward. They are especially interested in any dashcam footage from the vicinity.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Aurora OPP or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
