Incident details

A tragic multi-vehicle collision in Oshawa on Saturday afternoon resulted in the death of one person and injuries to eight others. The incident occurred on Ritson Road South near Bloor Street.

According to Durham Regional Police, the crash happened when a black Mercedes sedan, driven by a Toronto man, was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed.

  • The Mercedes entered a curb lane and collided with a white Nissan driven by a 41-year-old woman from Oshawa.
  • The impact caused the Nissan to lose control and strike three other vehicles—a Honda, a Chevrolet Orlando, and a Dodge Caravan—before bursting into flames.
  • The collision set off a chain reaction, with the Honda and Chevrolet Orlando crashing into several other vehicles.
  • The Mercedes continued southbound, eventually crossing the northbound lanes, leaving the roadway, and striking a chip truck before hitting a light pole.
  • The collision with the chip truck caused its awning to collapse, injuring a man who was waiting for food nearby.

Victim information

The 41-year-old driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. Nine other individuals were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
