Metrolinx shakes up leadership, cuts ties with two senior managers

metrolinx, severance pay

What’s happening at Metrolinx?

In a recent organizational shakeup, Metrolinx has announced the departure of two senior managers involved in major rapid transit projects, according to CBC News. The senior managers are:

  • Karla Avis-Birch, Chief Planning Officer
  • Steven Levene, Chief Operating Office of Rapid Transit

CEO Phil Verster informed staff about the decision in a memo, citing changing responsibilities and priorities as Metrolinx’s scope continues to expand across Ontario. Metrolinx faces mounting challenges related to its high-profile transit projects.

Delayed projects

  • The Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which has seen significant delays, and still does not have a firm opening date.
  • The Finch West LRT, planned to connect Finch West subway station with Humber College, also has no start date.
  • The Hurontario LRT (the Hazel McCallion Line), which will link Port Credit GO Station to Brampton Gateway Terminal, is awaiting an official launch timeline.

A Metrolinx spokesperson emphasized the importance of aligning the management structure with the agency’s expanding responsibilities, which now include light rail, subways, and bus rapid transit, in addition to heavy rail and bus operations.
