Driver critical after fiery crash with 2 TTC buses, allegedly ran red light
Incident details
A serious crash in midtown Toronto has left a man in critical condition, with several others injured, following a collision involving a vehicle and two Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) buses.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West.
- Toronto Paramedic Services responded to the scene early Wednesday morning.
- A man in his 20s was found with serious injuries.
- He was transported to a nearby hospital, and his condition has since been upgraded to life-threatening, according to Toronto police.
- One bus driver and two passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
- A second bus driver was assessed at the scene but did not require further medical attention.
Crash circumstances
Toronto police have reported that the crash was caused when the man driving the vehicle allegedly ran a red light, colliding with two TTC buses. The impact resulted in a fire breaking out in the vehicle. Photos from the scene show significant damage to both buses.
Toronto Fire Services confirmed that they were called to extinguish the vehicle fire and assisted in removing the car’s driver from the wreckage, although it is unclear who performed the rescue.
Investigation update
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash, and officials from the TTC are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
“We don’t have any info on the vehicle driver or how this happened at this time. Our thoughts are with all those injured,” a TTC spokesperson posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The intersection of Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West remains closed while crews work to clean up the scene and conduct further investigations.
