2 Hospitalized After Loose Tire Strikes Grey Honda on Hwy. 401 in Newcastle

2 people have been taken to hospital after a loose tire from an SUV struck a grey Honda on Highway 401 in Newcastle, Ont. on July 20, 2026.

What Happened?

• The incident took place on the highway between Mill Street and Newtonville Road before 11:30am ET on July 20.
• According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a tire popped off a black SUV in the eastbound lanes and struck a grey Honda in the westbound lanes.
• Aerial footage of the scene shows significant damage to the windshield of the grey Honda, as well as the roof.
• The occupants of the grey Honda, a man and a woman in their 70s, sustained minor and serious injuries, respectively. The woman was airlifted to a trauma centre.

UPDATE (12:13 p.m.): #Hwy401 WB lanes are now fully closed at Newtonville Rd. EB lanes are now open. An investigation is ongoing following a two-vehicle collision involving a loose tire. Two people were transported to hospital, with serious and minor injuries. ^pia

The driver of the black SUV has been charged with having detached parts coming from their vehicle.
