Is the YRDSB Planning to Cut Jobs in 2026?

Yes. The York Region District School Board (YRDSB) has reportedly issued layoff notices to nearly 250 staffers in June 2026.

According to Local 1734 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the workers that received a notice include:

  • 200+ educational assistants
  • 36 secretarial and administrative staff
  • 6 information technology employees
  • 6 library technicians

The workforce reduction comes as the school board is projected to lose approximately 6,389 students this fall as enrolment across Ontario continues to decline.
