SIU Investigating After Vehicle Evades OPP, Crashes into Lake Ontario

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario’s police watchdog, has stepped in after a vehicle ended up in Lake Ontario after ignoring a traffic stop conducted by provincial police west of Kingston on April 21, 2026.

What Happened?

  • According to officials, an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Bath Road in Greater Napanee before 11pm ET on April 21.
  • “Shortly after, the vehicle hit [a] ditch and entered Lake Ontario in the area of Highway 33 and County Road 21. It is currently unknown how many occupants were inside the vehicle,” the SIU said in a news release.
  • Several police units and search-and-rescue crews from Canadian Forces Base Trenton are involved in the search for the vehicle’s occupants.
