Show Notes

  • Ford lays off employees and contractors: It is important to note that despite the reason for the layoff and if in fact a layoff is implemented en masse, employees are still entitled to severance. Ford argues that the reason for the layoff was a shift to electrical vehicles. Employees in this layoff could have difficulty finding new employment.
  • An employer can let an employee go for any reason: Legally, employers are permitted to let an employee go for any reason as long as adequate compensation in a severance package is offered. Terminations without cause are fairly common. Employees cannot be let go for any reason that could be discriminatory.
  • Ministry of labour complaints when an employee is let go: Employees should be wary of filing a complaint with the Ministry of Labour regarding full severance entitlements. The Ministry of Labour can only advise employees on their minimum entitlements. Once documentation has been filed with the Ministry, further legal action is not possible.
  • Termination clauses in an employment contract: Oftentimes, provisions in an employment agreement that are included to limit an employee’s entitlements are not enforceable. Employees that have been mistreated or harassed by their employer could also bring forth further legal damages against an employer.
