What We Covered

Chapter 1:

Can I go back on LTD if I am unsuccessful in returning to work?

I have been on LTD since breaking my neck in a serious injury and suffered from brain damage.  I was offered a position with my employer that is supposed to accommodate my injury.  I am worried that I won’t be able to do the job because of my injuries.  Can I go back on LTD if I am unsuccessful in my new position?

Chapter 2:

Should I take a payout from the insurance company if I am likely to be off of work for more than 2 years?

My husband was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer.  We received short-term disability and LTD.  Recently we found that his cancer had spread.  The insurance company called us to get an update on his condition and offered us a payout up to a certain date, at which point they would cut us off.  What should we do?

Chapter 3:

What should I do if my insurer has cut me off because they think I can try harder to deal with my disability?

We received an email from a 57-year-old who was cut off form LTD stating “you need to learn how to deal with your disability.”

Chapter 4:

The Top 5 Mistakes Individuals Make When Dealing with Long-Term Disability Insurance

  • Assuming that their first priority is you
  • Assuming that your insurer will take what your doctor is saying at face value
  • Assuming that once you are approved for LTD there is nothing to be concerned about going forward
  • Assuming that your insurance company is always right
  • Assuming that you are powerless against the insurance company

Chapter 5:

Should I appeal the insurance company’s denial?

My wife has an alcohol addiction and cannot work because of it.  She applied for LTD because of this and was denied, her therapist thinks she won’t be able to go to work for a long time.  Should we appeal the decision?

Chapter 6:

Do I have to see a different doctor if my insurance adjuster is telling me to?

My son was attacked outside his home last year and was traumatized by the incident.  He was working as a sales executive making good money but hasn’t been back to work since.  His LTD adjuster keeps asking him to see their psychologist, but it seems like this doctor is only making him worse.  Does he have to continue to see this doctor?
