Ontario Works

Ontario Works is a social assistance program that offers both financial and employment assistance to eligible individuals in Ontario. Its primary goal is to help recipients become independent through employment, providing a pathway out of poverty.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility for Ontario Works is based on financial need and residency requirements:

  • Reside in Ontario: Must live in the province.
  • Age: Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Financial need: Your household doesn’t have the financial resources to meet basic living expenses.
  • Asset limit: The value of your assets does not exceed $10,000.
  • Willingness to participate: You’re willing to take part in activities that can help you find employment, unless exempt.

What assistance does Ontario Works provide?

Ontario Works aids eligible individuals and families through two principal components: Financial Assistance and Employment Assistance. Understanding each can help you navigate what support might be available to you.

Financial Assistance

This support is designed to help cover the costs of basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter. The financial aid provided is tailored to each situation, taking into account:

  • Basic needs and shelter: A single person can receive up to $733 a month for basic needs and shelter. This amount increases based on your family composition, such as if you have a spouse or dependents.
  • Additional benefits: You might be eligible for extra funds for specific needs, such as transportation for medical appointments, which is above the basic assistance.
  • Family size and composition: Assistance amounts vary if you have other immediate family members, ensuring support is reflective of your household needs.
  • Medical and other benefits: Clients may also qualify for medical benefits or assistance with eviction costs, highlighting the program’s comprehensive support approach.

The payment you receive is made up of two parts: a shelter allowance and an allowance for basic needs. The total amount is influenced by several factors including family size, income, assets, and housing costs.

Employment Assistance

In addition to financial aid, Ontario Works provides employment assistance to help recipients secure sustainable employment. This includes:

  • Job search support: Resources and guidance to help you look for and find work.
  • Resume building and interview preparation: Assistance in creating effective resumes and preparing for job interviews.
  • Training and education programs: Access to programs that can enhance your skills and qualifications for better job opportunities.
